Burn bans and outdoor burning rules in unincorporated Bell County

Bell County Commissioners Court can issue burn bans quickly when conditions are dry or windy. Violations carry a fine up to $500.

In unincorporated Bell County, outdoor burning is legal when no burn ban is active. But you must still call the Bell County Burn Ban line at (254) 933-5555 to report any burn. That call is required even when it is safe to burn.

The Commissioners Court — Bell County's governing body — can issue a burn ban any time it decides conditions are dangerous. A ban covers all unincorporated land. Breaking a burn ban is a Class C misdemeanor under Texas Local Government Code §352.081. A Class C misdemeanor carries a fine of up to $500.

Burn bans can start and end fast — sometimes within a week — depending on drought conditions, fire activity, and weather forecasts. Check the current status at bellcountytx.com under the Fire Marshal section. Sign up for county notices or check the site often during dry stretches, especially in late summer and fall.
