Groundwater & Wells
A Local District Oversees Your Water Well
The Rusk County Groundwater Conservation District regulates all private water wells in the county and requires registration of any new well.
If you own rural land in Rusk County and want to drill a water well, you must register it with the Rusk County Groundwater Conservation District (RCGCD). Texas state law requires this for any well in a groundwater district. The district protects the aquifers that supply most of the county's drinking and irrigation water.
The district also performs inspections to make sure wells are properly constructed and do not mix water from different aquifer zones. If you have an existing well and plan to increase production significantly — above 25,000 gallons per day — you need to go through an amendment process. For questions about permits, existing wells, or oil and gas well transfers, contact RCGCD at 903-657-1900. Their office is at 500 N. High St. in Henderson.
