Homestead Exemption

Homestead Exemption Can Lower Your School Tax Bill

If you live in the home you own in Schleicher County, you may qualify for a homestead exemption that reduces your taxable value.

Texas law requires school districts to give a $140,000 exemption on a primary residence. That means the school portion of your tax bill is based on a lower value than what your home is actually worth. There are also exemptions for people who are 65 or older and for people with disabilities.

You apply once through the Schleicher County Appraisal District. The application requires a copy of your Texas driver's license or state ID showing your home address. Download the form at schleichercad.org or call 325-853-2617. The general filing deadline is before May 1 of the tax year, but check the CAD for the current year's deadline.
