Homestead Exemption
File for a Homestead Exemption to Lower Your School Tax Bill
Texas law requires school districts to exempt at least $140,000 of your home's value — but only if you apply.
If you own and live in your home in Hemphill County, you may qualify for a homestead exemption. School districts in Texas must take at least $140,000 off the appraised value of your primary home before calculating your school tax. That can save hundreds of dollars per year. Other local taxing units — the county, the city, special districts — can also offer their own optional exemptions on top of that.
You apply once with the Hemphill County Appraisal District. You will need a copy of your Texas driver's license or state ID showing the property address. There is typically a deadline around May 1, but check the appraisal district directly since dates can shift. Download the application form (Form 50-114) from the Texas Comptroller's site, or pick one up at the appraisal district office at 102 N. 5th St. in Canadian.
