Licenses & Permits
You need a Texas hunting or fishing license to hunt and fish in Hays County
Texas law requires hunters and anglers to carry a valid state license, and buying the right add-ons for migratory birds or certain species is also required.
Anyone fishing or hunting in Hays County needs a valid Texas hunting or fishing license from TPWD. All migratory bird hunters need a Texas Migratory Game Bird Endorsement on top of the basic license. Waterfowl hunters (ducks and geese) who are 16 or older must also carry a federal duck stamp. Dove hunters need the state endorsement but not the federal duck stamp. Quail season runs November 1 through February 28, with a daily bag limit of 15.
You can buy licenses at tpwd.texas.gov or through the Texas Hunt and Fish app. Most sporting goods stores that sell ammo also sell licenses. Licenses expire August 31 each year. If you are new to Texas hunting, download the free TPWD Outdoor Annual app — it shows regulations for your exact location.
