Hunting in Brooks County: South Texas Brush Country Rules
Brooks County is prime South Texas hunting land. Seasons for white-tailed deer, turkey, dove, and quail are set by TPWD and should be checked every year.
Brooks County sits in the South Texas brush country. The thick mesquite and scrub hold strong numbers of white-tailed deer, wild turkey, mourning and white-winged dove, and quail.
Most hunting here is on private ranches through leases. You still need a Texas hunting license whether you hunt public or private land.
For the 2025-26 season, TPWD sets the white-tailed deer bag limit in Brooks County at 5 deer, with no more than 3 bucks. The general deer season runs November through mid-January.
Wild turkey season runs in the fall and spring. The annual limit is 4 turkeys total for the year.
Dove season follows the South Zone calendar. Quail season runs November through February. You need an Upland Game Bird Endorsement to hunt quail.
Seasons, bag limits, and endorsement rules can change year to year. Always check the current TPWD Outdoor Annual before you go. The TPWD Brooks County regulations page is the official source for up-to-date rules.
