Know Your Hurricane Evacuation Route Before a Storm
Hidalgo County sits inland from the Gulf Coast but must evacuate across limited roads when a major hurricane threatens the Valley.
Hidalgo County is not right on the coast, but a major hurricane can still force the whole Valley to evacuate. Roads fill up fast. Knowing your route before a storm arrives is important.
TxDOT has set official evacuation routes for south Texas. These include roads through Hidalgo County that lead toward San Antonio and other inland areas.
During a major evacuation, the state may use contraflow. Contraflow means lanes that normally go one direction are flipped to send more traffic inland. Check TxDOT's hurricane preparedness page and the Texas Division of Emergency Management before storm season starts. Learn your route now—do not wait until a storm is coming.
