Javelina Can Be Hunted Year-Round in the Southern Region

Hidalgo County is in the Southern Region for javelina, where the season is open year-round with a limit of 2 per license year.

Javelinas—also called collared peccaries—are common in the brush country of south Texas. They look a little like small wild pigs, but they are a different animal entirely.

Hidalgo County is in the Southern Region for javelina hunting. TPWD allows hunting from September 1 through August 31 of the following year. That is a full 12-month season. The limit is 2 animals per license year.

You need a standard Texas hunting license. The bigger challenge is land access. Most javelina habitat in Hidalgo County is on private ranches. Make sure you have permission before you go. Confirm the current rules on the TPWD Outdoor Annual before you hunt.
