Most Lynn County water comes from the Ogallala Aquifer, and it is declining

Lynn County sits over the Ogallala Aquifer, a massive underground water source that has been dropping for decades due to heavy agricultural pumping.

The Ogallala Aquifer sits under about 49 Texas counties. Lynn County is one of them. About 95 percent of the water pumped from it goes to irrigation. Rain refills it very slowly. Pumping pulls out far more than rain puts back. So the water level has been dropping for decades.

Own land outside a city in Lynn County? Your water likely comes from a private well in this aquifer. Lynn County falls inside the High Plains Underground Water Conservation District. That district requires wells to be registered and permitted. The rules set how far apart wells must be and how much you can pump. Before you drill a new well or buy rural land, check with the district first. The Texas Water Development Board tracks aquifer levels across the state.
