Water Wells and the Ogallala Aquifer in Terry County
Most rural land in Terry County gets its water from the Ogallala Aquifer. The South Plains Underground Water Conservation District regulates wells and water use in the county.
If you buy rural land in Terry County, your water most likely comes from the Ogallala Aquifer. It sits underground and is pumped through private wells.
The South Plains Underground Water Conservation District (SPUWCD) is in charge of well drilling and water use in Terry County. SPUWCD was created for Terry County. It later grew to include parts of Hockley County too. It is a separate district from the High Plains Underground Water Conservation District. The High Plains district does not cover Terry County.
Before you drill a well, contact SPUWCD. Ask about permit requirements, fees, spacing rules, and production limits. These rules can change, so check directly with SPUWCD.
The Ogallala Aquifer is not unlimited. Water levels have been dropping across the High Plains for decades. Visit the SPUWCD website for current permit information and aquifer data before you buy or build.
