A Groundwater District Protects Johnson County's Water Supply
The Prairielands Groundwater Conservation District manages groundwater in Johnson County — if you plan to drill a well, you need to know the rules.
The Prairielands Groundwater Conservation District covers Ellis, Johnson, Hill, and Somervell counties. It sets rules for wells that pull water from underground. Most home and livestock wells do not need a permit, but they still need to be registered with the district.
The district works to stop waste, protect wells that already exist, and keep local control over the water supply. Landowners can also get help paying for rainwater harvesting — rebates up to $500 per household.
Call the district at 817-556-2299 or visit prairielandsgcd.org for current rules, registration, and fee details.
