Fishing Regulations
There Is a Seasonal Alligator Gar Restriction on the Red River
During May, taking or possessing alligator gar while on the Red River in Lamar County is prohibited under TPWD rules.
The Red River runs along the top of Lamar County. It forms the border with Oklahoma. TPWD (Texas Parks and Wildlife Department) has a special rule for alligator gar on this part of the river. In May, you cannot catch alligator gar or have one in your possession while you are on the Red River or any stream that flows into it in Lamar County.
This rule applies to Lamar County and several neighboring counties along the Texas-Oklahoma border. All other fishing on the Red River follows statewide rules. You still need a valid Texas fishing license. Before you go, check the TPWD Outdoor Annual or the TPWD fishing regulations page for the current year's rules.
