State Highway 68 in eastern Hidalgo County is a four-lane divided highway project designed to improve traffic flow and emergency evacuation capacity.

State Highway 68 is a planned four-lane divided highway in eastern Hidalgo County. As of mid-2026, the project has completed environmental review but construction has not yet begun. It runs from US 83/I-2 to US 281/I-69C. TxDOT says the road is needed to help the area handle traffic and emergencies—including hurricane evacuations.

Once construction begins, new highway projects in the Valley can shift traffic patterns for years while work is underway.
