Texas State University shapes San Marcos and the local economy

Texas State University, one of the largest universities in Texas, has its main campus in San Marcos and is a major driver of the local economy and population.

The school was chartered in 1899 as Southwest Texas State Normal School. It opened in 1903. In 2003 it was renamed Texas State University-San Marcos, and in 2013 it became Texas State University. The campus sits on a hill above the San Marcos River, near the center of the city. It is one of the biggest employers in Hays County.

The university keeps San Marcos younger than most Texas cities and drives a strong rental market. Road and housing decisions in the county often follow enrollment growth. If you are moving to San Marcos, expect heavy traffic near campus on game days and move-in weekends.
