Coastal Windstorm Insurance

Coastal homes may need windstorm insurance through the state

Matagorda County is one of 14 Texas coastal counties where private windstorm insurance can be hard to get, so many homeowners use the state's backup insurer instead.

The Texas Windstorm Insurance Association (TWIA) is the state's backup plan for wind and hail coverage. Matagorda County is one of 14 Texas coastal counties it covers. Private insurers often say no to wind coverage here. Others charge very high rates.

To get a TWIA policy, you usually must show that at least one private insurer turned you down. Most homes also need a certificate first. That certificate comes from the Texas Department of Insurance or TWIA. It shows the home was built to meet wind-safety rules. There are a few exceptions to this rule.

If your home is in a high-risk flood zone, TWIA may also ask you to carry flood insurance. Check TWIA's website for the current rules before you buy a policy.
