Hays County residents can register vehicles at H-E-B locations and online
You can renew your vehicle registration at several locations across Hays County, including H-E-B grocery stores, without going to the main tax office.
Hays County's Motor Vehicle Division handles title and registration for county residents. The main office is at 712 S. Stagecoach Trail in San Marcos. But the county also offers registration renewal at six H-E-B stores in San Marcos, Kyle, Buda, Wimberley, and Dripping Springs. You can also renew online using your license plate number and the last four digits of your VIN.
As of January 1, 2025, Texas no longer requires an annual safety inspection for non-commercial vehicles. Hays County does not require a vehicle emissions (smog) test — that requirement applies only to 17 specific counties in the Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth, Austin, El Paso, and San Antonio metro areas. Travis and Williamson counties require it, but Hays does not.
