Vehicle registration in Bell County: no safety inspection required since 2025
As of January 1, 2025, most Bell County drivers no longer need a safety inspection to register their vehicle. A small replacement fee is added at registration instead.
Texas House Bill 3297, passed in 2023, ended the annual safety inspection for non-commercial vehicles. The change took effect January 1, 2025. If you have a non-commercial car or truck in Bell County, you now only need proof of insurance to register it — no inspection required.
Instead of paying an inspection station, you now pay an Inspection Program Replacement Fee when you register or renew. The fee is $7.50 for most vehicles. For a brand-new vehicle never registered in Texas, the fee is $16.75 and covers two years. The Bell County Tax Assessor-Collector collects this fee automatically when you register.
Bell County does not require emissions testing, so most residents skip that step entirely. Commercial vehicles must still pass inspections under state law. To register or renew online, go to txdmv.gov. For in-person registration, find Bell County Tax Office locations at bellcountytx.com.
