Historic Courthouse
Denton's 1896 stone courthouse still stands on the downtown square
The Denton County Courthouse on the downtown square was built in 1896 from stone quarried a few miles north of Denton.
The current Denton County Courthouse was built in 1896. Workers cut the stone from land just a few miles north of the city. The building sits on the downtown square that has been the center of Denton since the 1850s.
Many Texas county courthouses built in this era have been preserved through state programs or listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The downtown Denton square today is a busy cultural spot. Shops and restaurants ring the historic building. If you visit Denton, the square is worth a stop. It connects the city's past to its present as a growing college town.
