Historic Building

The county courthouse is built from adobe

The Hudspeth County Courthouse in Sierra Blanca, built in 1919, is made of adobe and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Most Texas courthouses are stone or brick. The Hudspeth County Courthouse in Sierra Blanca was built in 1919 using adobe — sun-dried clay bricks. The Texas Historical Commission describes it as a Mediterranean style building. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975 and was designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1962.

The THC restored the building between 2002 and 2004 as part of its Texas Historic Courthouse Preservation Program. Workers added foundation piers to support the thick 18-inch adobe walls and replaced the roof. The courthouse still functions as the seat of county government in Sierra Blanca.
