Farmland in Hansford County Can Be Taxed at Ag Value

Land used for farming or ranching in Hansford County may qualify for a lower tax rate based on what the land produces, not what it would sell for.

Texas law allows agricultural land to be taxed on its productivity value — basically, what the land earns from farming or ranching. This is often much lower than the land's market value. In Hansford County, common qualifying uses include growing wheat, corn, sorghum, and raising cattle. The county's black, sandy, and loam soils support all of these.

You apply for this valuation through the Hansford County Appraisal District. If you later stop using the land for agriculture, the county can "roll back" your taxes and charge you the difference for the previous three years. Check with the CAD at 806-659-5575 or hansfordcad.org before you buy or change land use to understand how rollback works.
