Property Tax Basics

One Office Appraises Your Property. Another Collects the Tax.

The Cherokee County Appraisal District sets your property value; separate taxing units bill and collect the tax.

The Cherokee County Appraisal District (CCAD) appraises all property in the county. It sets the taxable value. It does not collect taxes. That job belongs to the individual taxing units, like school districts and cities.

Taxing units in Cherokee County include six school districts (Alto, Jacksonville, Rusk, New Summerfield, Wells, and Troup), plus the cities of Alto, Rusk, Wells, and Jacksonville. Each unit sets its own tax rate. Your total bill adds up all the rates that apply to your property. Contact CCAD at 903-683-2296 or cherokeecad.com if you have questions about your value or want to protest it.
