Aspermont: The County Seat With a Latin Name

Aspermont has been the county seat since 1898, when it replaced the earlier town of Rayner after a contested election, and its name is Latin for 'rough mountain.'

A. L. Rhomberg platted Aspermont in 1889 and gave it a Latin name meaning 'rough mountain.' Local residents had called the area Sunflower Flat before that. The town won the county seat election in June 1898, replacing Rayner. The legal disputes dragged on, and a contract for the new courthouse in Aspermont was not signed until March 1900.

The Stamford and Northwestern Railway reached Aspermont in 1909, the same year the town incorporated. That rail connection helped the economy grow around ranching and, later, oil. The county is also named after a historical figure — Confederate General Thomas J. 'Stonewall' Jackson. Today Aspermont has a population of under 1,000 and serves as the main service center for the county. An annual rodeo remains a signature community event.
