Homestead Exemption

Apply for Your Homestead Exemption at the Appraisal District

If your Stonewall County home is your main residence, you can apply for a homestead exemption to lower your taxable value — but you must apply, it is not automatic.

A homestead exemption reduces the portion of your home's value that gets taxed. State law requires school districts in Texas to grant a $140,000 homestead exemption on a residence homestead (Tax Code §11.13(b)). Property owners who are 65 or older or who have a disability may qualify for additional exemptions — the mandatory school district add-on for that group is $60,000 (Tax Code §11.13(c)).

To claim the exemption, file an application with the Stonewall County Appraisal District at stonewallcad.org or call 940-989-3363. You will need a copy of your Texas driver's license or state ID showing the property address. The general deadline to file is April 30, but check the appraisal district site each year — deadlines can shift. Late applications may still be accepted up to two years after the deadline.
