Big Thicket National Preserve Has Units in Polk County

Big Thicket National Preserve spans several Southeast Texas counties including Polk County, with free day-use access to trails and waterways.

Big Thicket National Preserve covers parts of seven Southeast Texas counties, including Polk County. The preserve has no single entrance — it is made up of separate units scattered across the region. Day use is free. The preserve is open from dawn to dusk.

Visitors can hike more than 30 miles of trails, paddle creeks and bayous, and join free ranger programs. The main visitor center is at 6044 FM 420, Kountze, TX 77625 (409-951-6700), in neighboring Hardin County. Check nps.gov/bith for a map of units near Polk County and for current program schedules.
