Big Thicket National Preserve Has Trails in Tyler County
The Turkey Creek Unit of Big Thicket National Preserve spans Tyler and Hardin counties and offers free hiking, backcountry camping, and fishing.
Big Thicket National Preserve is spread across several East Texas counties. The Turkey Creek Unit covers 8,032 acres across Tyler and Hardin counties. It is free to enter. No day-use fee is required.
Five trails range from 1 mile to 14 miles long. The Kirby Nature Trail and Turkey Creek Trail are among the named routes. Backcountry camping is allowed year-round. A free permit is required — pick it up at the visitor center before you head out. No fee is charged for the permit. Fishing is also permitted. Trailheads are north of Kountze near US 69/287. Check the NPS website for current trail conditions and any closures before you visit.
