Caddo people lived in the Rockwall County area before Anglo settlement
The area that is now Rockwall County was home to Caddo and Creek peoples in the early 1800s. Anglo-American settlers arrived in the 1840s.
Caddo and Creek Indians lived in this area in the early 1800s. The Rockwall County official history says they were in conflict when the first Anglo-American settlers came in the 1840s. The Caddo had long roots in East Texas and the Trinity River basin.
In the mid-1840s, the National Road of the Republic of Texas was built through the region. That road brought more settlers in. Within a few decades, the indigenous people were pushed out.
Both the Rockwall County history page and the Handbook of Texas record this early history. They are good places to learn more about what life in this area looked like before Anglo settlement.
