Extra homestead exemption for seniors and disabled homeowners in Rockwall

Homeowners aged 65 or older, or those with a qualifying disability, get an extra $60,000 off their home's school district appraised value.

Texas gives homeowners who are 65 or older an extra $60,000 school tax exemption. This is on top of the regular $140,000 homestead exemption. Together, that shields up to $200,000 of your home's value from school taxes. Homeowners who qualify as disabled under Social Security get the same extra $60,000.

There is also a tax freeze for seniors. Once you turn 65 and apply, your school district tax bill cannot go up as long as you live in the home. If a qualifying homeowner dies, a surviving spouse who is at least 55 years old can keep the exemption.

To get these benefits, file with the Rockwall Central Appraisal District. Disability must be based on Social Security disability status. Other disability programs do not automatically qualify. Check the Texas Comptroller's website for the current form and rules.
