Groundwater

Rural Wilson County relies heavily on the Carrizo-Wilcox Aquifer

The Carrizo-Wilcox Aquifer is the main groundwater source for much of Wilson County, and the Evergreen district monitors its levels to protect long-term supply.

Much of Wilson County sits above the Carrizo-Wilcox Aquifer. It is a large sandstone formation that runs through South Texas.

Rural homes and farms that do not have public water service usually depend on this aquifer. The Evergreen Underground Water Conservation District runs a monitoring well program to track water levels in the aquifer.

Water levels can fall during dry years and drought. If you are buying rural land that has no public water service, ask these questions: Is there already a well on the property? How deep is it? What do water quality tests show?

The Evergreen district website has resources about aquifer science. You can also contact them directly with questions about well conditions in your area.
