During Major Hurricanes, Freeway Lanes in Harris County Can Be Reversed

TxDOT can activate contraflow on major Houston freeways during a hurricane evacuation, reversing lanes so all traffic moves inland.

Contraflow means lanes that normally carry traffic toward the city are flipped to carry traffic away from it. During a large hurricane, TxDOT can activate contraflow on I-10, I-45, US 290, and US 59. This adds more lanes heading away from the coast and helps traffic move faster.

Contraflow is not used for every storm. It only happens during major events. Get your information from Harris County Emergency Management and TxDOT — not social media.
