Property Tax Protest

You Can Fight Your Appraisal in Harris County

Harris County property owners have the right to protest their appraised value every year — and many do.

When you receive your appraisal notice, you can file a protest with the Appraisal Review Board (ARB). The ARB is an independent panel, not part of HCAD. File by May 15 or within 30 days of when your notice was mailed, whichever is later.

Most protests go through two steps. First, you meet informally with an HCAD appraiser. If you reach an agreement, it is done. If not, you get a second notice scheduling a formal ARB hearing. The hearing lasts about 15 minutes. You can file by mail, in person at 13013 Northwest Freeway, or online through HCAD's portal at hcad.org.
