Water Supply
Denton County's water supply planning is overseen by the state
The Texas Water Development Board coordinates regional water supply planning for Denton County as part of Region C, which covers the upper Trinity River Basin.
A state agency called the Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) helps plan water supplies for all Texas counties. Denton County is in Region C. That region covers the upper Trinity River Basin and 16 counties, including the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area. Local planning groups in Region C study how much water people will need in the future and figure out how to supply it. The TWDB checks and funds these plans on roughly five-year cycles.
Most people in Denton County's suburbs get water from a city or a MUD water system. People in rural areas may use private wells or small co-op water systems. If you plan to buy rural land and rely on a private well, test the water before you close. Also check whether a groundwater district oversees your area, since those districts may have rules about drilling or water use.
