The 1896 DeWitt County Courthouse Was Fully Restored and Is Worth a Visit
The DeWitt County Courthouse in Cuero was built in 1896 in Romanesque Revival style and underwent a thorough restoration that reopened in 2007.
The DeWitt County Courthouse sits in Cuero. It was built in 1896. Architect Arthur O. Watson designed it in the Romanesque Revival style — a look with heavy stone, rounded arches, and decorative detail.
Over the years, parts of the building were changed or covered up. The original ironwork, woodwork, and tall ceilings were hidden behind 1950s updates.
A major restoration fixed that. The Texas Historical Commission's courthouse preservation program supported the work. Workers rebuilt the original district courtroom to its full two-story height. They also recreated the iron staircase and brought back the decorative woodwork.
The courthouse was rededicated in October 2007. It still works as the county courthouse in Cuero today.
