Homestead Exemption

Homestead Exemption Lowers Your Tax Bill in DeWitt County

If you live in the home you own, you can apply for a homestead exemption that reduces the taxable value of your property.

Texas gives homeowners a break called the residence homestead exemption. It lowers the value your tax rate is applied to. It will not wipe out your tax bill, but it does make it smaller. You must live in the home as your primary residence to qualify.

To get it, file the exemption form with the DeWitt County Appraisal District. The deadline is before May 1 of the tax year. Always check the current deadline before you file.

Extra exemptions exist if you are 65 or older, are disabled, or are a disabled veteran. Seniors and disabled persons can also choose to defer — meaning delay — paying taxes on their homestead. Interest still builds up while you defer. Check the official sources listed here for current rules and forms.
