Growth and Development
Wise County Is Growing as a DFW Commuter County
Wise County's population has grown steadily as people move out of the DFW metro and commute to jobs in Fort Worth and beyond.
Wise County had nearly 70,000 residents by 2019, far more than just a couple of decades before. People are drawn by rural land and lower costs, while still being about 40 miles northwest of Fort Worth. US Highways 287 and 380 are the main roads people use to commute.
That growth has brought new housing subdivisions. It has also brought special taxing districts — like MUDs — set up to pay for water and sewer in those new neighborhoods. Water supply, school crowding, and traffic on narrow two-lane FM roads are all real issues here.
If you are buying a home or land in Wise County, check with the school district you are interested in. Enrollment is growing and district boundaries can shift.
