Special Districts
Special Districts Can Add to Your Property Tax Bill
Some Wise County properties fall inside special districts that add their own property taxes on top of county and school rates.
Wise County has several types of special taxing districts. Municipal Utility Districts (MUDs) build and run water, sewer, and drainage systems in newer neighborhoods. Water Control and Improvement Districts (WCIDs) do similar work. Emergency Services Districts (ESDs) pay for fire trucks and emergency crews in areas outside city limits.
If your property sits inside one of these districts, you pay an extra tax rate. That rate is added on top of what you already owe the county, school district, and city. The extra charge can be significant.
Before you buy any property, check whether a special district covers that address. The Texas Comptroller's county directory lists the active districts in Wise County. It is a free lookup and takes only a few minutes.
