Disabled Veterans May Owe No Property Tax at All

A Texas veteran with a 100 percent service-connected disability rating from the VA can receive a total property tax exemption on their home.

Texas gives a full property tax exemption to veterans rated 100 percent disabled by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The disability must be service-connected. The veteran must also receive full disability compensation. This means zero property taxes on your home. It is not just a reduction — it is a full exemption. It applies to all taxing entities, including the school district.

Veterans with lower disability ratings still get a partial exemption. The amount depends on their rating percentage. Surviving spouses of qualifying veterans may also be eligible.

To apply, file with the Rusk County Appraisal District. The address is 107 N. Van Buren St. in Henderson. You can also download the form at ruskcad.org. The general deadline is April 30. Check with the appraisal district for the current deadline and the VA documents you will need.
