Lynn County has two permanent natural lakes on the flat High Plains
Double Lakes and Tahoka Lake are two natural lakes in Lynn County, which is unusual for this flat, dry region.
Most of the High Plains has no permanent surface water. Lynn County is an exception. Double Lakes sit about seven miles northwest of Tahoka. Tahoka Lake sits about three miles northeast of Tahoka. Tahoka Lake's bed is sometimes dry, but when it holds water both lakes have served as important stops for people and animals crossing the plains for centuries.
Neither lake is currently a state park. They are not managed by Texas Parks and Wildlife as public recreation areas, so access depends on land ownership. The Handbook of Texas entries for Double Lakes and Tahoka Lake give historical background on both. If you are interested in visiting, verify current access before you go.
