Double Mountain and the Brazos Forks Shape the County

Stonewall County's most recognizable landmark is Double Mountain, and two forks of the Brazos River — the Salt Fork and the Double Mountain Fork — run through the county.

Stonewall County covers about 926 square miles of the Rolling Plains. The terrain rises from around 1,500 feet to over 2,400 feet. Double Mountain, one of the most visible landmarks in the region, sits in the county and is listed in the Handbook of Texas. The Salt Fork and Double Mountain Fork of the Brazos River frame the county, with smaller creeks cutting through the rolling terrain.

Low-water crossings on county roads can become dangerous during heavy rain. The Brazos tributaries can rise quickly. If you plan to buy or build near a creek or river bottom, check the FEMA flood map for your specific parcel at msc.fema.gov before you close on the property. The Texas Flood Information Viewer at map.texasflood.org also shows current and historical gauge data for the area.
