Property Tax
Nine Different Taxing Units Can Appear on Your Tax Bill
Property owners in Mitchell County may owe taxes to up to nine different local government entities, depending on where their land sits.
Mitchell County has nine active taxing units. They include the county, three school districts (Colorado, Loraine, and Westbrook ISD), three cities (Colorado City, Loraine, and Westbrook), the Lone Wolf Groundwater Conservation District, and a hospital district. Each sets its own tax rate.
If you live inside city limits, you pay city taxes plus all the others that apply. Rural parcels outside any city may still owe several of these. Your total bill is the sum of all rates applied to your appraised value. The Texas Comptroller's directory page for Mitchell County lists all active units.
