Lake Colorado City State Park: Camping and Fishing Near Town

Lake Colorado City State Park sits just south of Colorado City and offers camping, fishing, boating, and hiking on a 1,618-acre lake.

The park is at 4582 FM 2836, about four miles southwest of Colorado City. The lake covers 1,618 acres and was formed by damming Morgan Creek in 1949. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department completed purchase of the park from a private power company in December 2024. The park has cabins, campsites with showers, a boat ramp, a fishing pier, and kayak rentals.

Common fish species include largemouth bass, channel catfish, and sunfish. The park also attracts birdwatchers — more than 300 bird species have been recorded there. Daily entrance fees apply; check with TPWD for current prices before visiting. The park gates open at 6 a.m. and close at 10 p.m. Algal blooms can occasionally close swimming areas, so check conditions ahead of your trip.
