Denton County drivers still need an emissions test to register most cars

Most Texas counties dropped the safety inspection sticker, but Denton County is in the DFW air quality zone. Gas-powered cars here still need an emissions test to renew registration.

Texas dropped the annual safety inspection sticker for most counties. Denton County is different. It sits inside the Dallas-Fort Worth area. That area has an air quality problem, so the state still requires an emissions test here.

The test applies to gas-powered cars between 2 and 24 model years old. Electric cars do not need the test. Diesel vehicles do not need it either. Neither do motorcycles or mopeds. If your car fails, you cannot renew your registration. You have to fix the problem and pass first. Use the TCEQ website to find a licensed test station near you.
