Flood Risk

Check the FEMA flood map before buying property near Elm Creek

Parts of Taylor County along Elm Creek and other drainages carry FEMA flood zone designations; look up any address on the FEMA map before you buy or build.

Taylor County sits in semi-arid West Texas, but flash flooding is a real risk. Heavy rain can quickly fill dry creek beds. FEMA publishes flood maps that show which areas face elevated flood risk. Properties in a high-risk flood zone (Zone A or AE) require flood insurance if you have a federally backed mortgage.

Before you buy or build, look up the address at the FEMA Flood Map Service Center. Enter the address and it shows you the flood zone for that parcel. If you are in a high-risk zone, get a flood insurance quote from the National Flood Insurance Program. Even in moderate-risk zones, flooding can happen — the map is a starting point, not a guarantee.
