Flood Risk

Harris County Has One of the Most Active Flood Programs in the Country

Harris County is one of the most flood-prone counties in the United States, and the county runs a major flood control agency to manage that risk.

The Harris County Flood Control District (HCFCD) manages hundreds of miles of channels and bayous. The county floods regularly from heavy rain, tropical storms, and hurricanes. Buying a home here without checking the flood zone is a serious risk.

HCFCD has a voluntary home buyout program for properties that flood repeatedly. They also run MAAPnext, a project with FEMA to produce updated, detailed flood maps for the county. You can check current flood mapping tools at hcfcd.org. FEMA flood maps (for insurance purposes) are at msc.fema.gov. Flood insurance is not included in a standard homeowner policy — you must buy it separately.
