The Fort Griffin Fandangle Is an Official Texas State Play

Since 1938, Albany has staged an outdoor musical drama about the county's frontier history that the Texas Legislature recognized as one of four official state plays.

The Fort Griffin Fandangle is an outdoor musical drama performed each June in Albany. It tells the story of the region's past through songs, narration, and dance. The show is staged at the Prairie Theatre, an open-air venue west of town. Performances take place on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings during the last two weeks of June.

The Fandangle started in 1938 and has been running ever since. In 1979, the 66th Texas Legislature named it one of four official state plays of Texas. By the 2010s, more than 300 local residents participated as cast and crew. The show is produced entirely by the community and is promoted by word of mouth — there is no paid advertising. Ticket and schedule information can be found through the Fort Griffin Fandangle Association.
