Galveston Island State Park Is About an Hour from Houston
Galveston Island State Park offers beach and bay access for camping, fishing, bird watching, and paddling — close to the Houston metro.
The park sits on Galveston Island, just south of Harris County. It has two sides: beach and bay. Both sides offer fishing. A fish cleaning station, canoe and kayak launch, and hiking trails are available. Camping is permitted with a reservation.
Fishing from shore inside the park requires no license — the state park shore-fishing exemption applies, but a license is still needed for boat fishing in open bay waters. The bay side has a canoe and kayak launch for paddlers. Bird watching is popular year-round given the park's location along a major migratory flyway. Reserve campsites and check current fees at the TPWD reservation site before visiting.
