Civil War History

The Great Hanging of 1862 is a defining and painful chapter of Cooke County history

In October 1862, about 42 men suspected of Union loyalty were executed in Gainesville in what is known as the Great Hanging at Gainesville.

Cooke County voted against secession in 1861. But Confederate leaders moved fast to silence anyone who disagreed. In the fall of 1862, local officials gathered a citizen jury. That jury tried dozens of men accused of being disloyal to the Confederacy. About 42 men were hanged in Gainesville. This is called the Great Hanging at Gainesville.

Many early settlers in Cooke County had ties to free states. German immigrant communities like Muenster and Lindsay also called this county home. The Great Hanging is a documented event. It is recorded in the Handbook of Texas, which is the official Texas historical encyclopedia. This history is part of the county's identity. Anyone who studies or moves here will come across it.
