Homestead Exemption

Homestead exemption can lower your school tax bill

Texas law requires school districts to cut $140,000 off a home's appraised value for owners who live in the home as their main residence.

If you own a home in Cooke County and it is your main home, you likely qualify for the residence homestead exemption. Texas school districts must give a $140,000 reduction off your appraised value. That alone can save a meaningful amount on your school tax each year.

Homeowners age 65 or older or who are disabled get an additional exemption and a tax freeze on the school portion of their bill. You apply once with the Cooke County Appraisal District using Form 50-114. The general deadline to file is before May 1 of the tax year. Check the CAD website for the current deadline and any local-option exemptions offered by other taxing units in the county.
