Colorado County Has Its Own Groundwater District
The Colorado County Groundwater Conservation District sets rules for water wells in the county. If you use a private well or plan to drill one, these rules apply to you.
The Texas Legislature created the Colorado County Groundwater Conservation District in 2007. A groundwater conservation district (GCD) is a local agency that controls how wells are drilled and used. This district can set rules on how far apart wells must be, how much water can be pumped, and what permits you need.
If you buy rural land with a private well, check the district's rules before you drill or pump.
The district belongs to Groundwater Management Area 15. That is a regional planning group covering several counties.
Texas has no statewide drinking-water standard for private wells. Testing and managing your well water is your job. The Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) tracks well data across the state. It is a good place to start if you want to learn about local aquifers. The district's management plan is on file with the TWDB.
