A local district regulates water wells in Sutton County

If you plan to drill a water well in Sutton County, a local district sets the rules and may require a permit.

Sutton County is dry. Most rural properties depend on water wells that reach underground water. The county has its own water authority — the Sutton County Underground Water Conservation District. It manages the local aquifer and regulates new wells. Before you drill, contact the district to ask what permits you need.

The district is part of Groundwater Management Area 7. That area oversees the Edwards-Trinity (Plateau) Aquifer, which lies under this part of West Texas. It supplies drinking water and irrigation for a large region. The Texas Water Development Board tracks water levels and well records for the county. If you are buying rural land, ask whether any existing wells are permitted and when they were last tested.
