Groundwater Rules
Parts of Denton County fall under the North Texas Groundwater Conservation District
If your property uses a private well in parts of Denton County, groundwater conservation district rules may apply to drilling and use.
The North Texas Groundwater Conservation District covers portions of Denton, Collin, and Cooke counties. Groundwater districts in Texas regulate well drilling and sometimes require permits or water-use reporting. If you plan to drill a new well or deepen an existing one, check whether a district permit is required.
Most of the fast-growing suburban parts of Denton County are on public water systems. But rural parcels in the northern and western parts of the county may rely on wells. The Texas Water Development Board maintains the statewide groundwater district map and contact list at twdb.texas.gov.
